A smart scale. You may have seen them before. A new kind of weight scale, they record measurements that go beyond how many pounds you weigh and sends that information to an app on your phone.
There are many different measurements that a Bluetooth body fat scale can take. For those unfamiliar with some of these, here is a quick rundown of the terminology and what it means for your health.
See your weight in pounds. The ideal weight per person ultimately depends on their age and height. That said, some may have personal goals regarding weight that fall outside these parameters.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is a measurement of body fat based on your height and weight. The general calculation connects your weight to your height. A rating below 18.5 is underweight and above 24.9 is overweight.
Muscle Mass Percentage
On a wireless Bluetooth scale, you have muscle mass percentage which calculates the percentage of muscle on your frame. The ideal muscle mass percentage varies according to gender and age.
Body age refers to your ‘biological age’. This is calculated based off assessing a variety of health risk factors and is essentially a summary of other measurements taken by your body fat scale.
Visceral Fat Percentage
Visceral fat is the amount of fat that exists around the organs. It is calculated on a scale of 1 to 59. A healthy level of visceral fat is a rating of 13 and under. If visceral fat exceeds 13, immediate lifestyle changes are needed.
Bone content on a Bluetooth smart scale is the percentage of bone mineral compared to total body weight. Ideally, the average bone content in adults is 3-5%. Bone mass declines slowly with age and so this can be an important metric to monitor as you grow older.
Water percentage is exactly what you think it is. It calculates the water composition in the body comparing it to total body weight. The average adult male should have a water percentage between 50 and 65 percent, while for a woman, it’s between 45 and 60 percent.
Body Fat Percentage
Fat percentage is an estimate of how much of your body is fat. On average, a woman’s fat percentage is between 25 and 31 percent while for men, it’s between 18 and 25 percent.
These are just some of the estimates given from a Bluetooth high-tech smart scale. These are estimates, calculated through bio-electrical impedance analysis tech. Upgrade to a new Bluetooth smart scale today and shop with Living.ca.
